Transformable Wheelchair

While I was at Utah State University I had the opportunity to work with a team of engineering students (“The AutoBots”) to design and build a transformable wheelchair, which was commissioned by the Assistive Technology Laboratory (ATL) and Center for Persons with Disabilities (CPD).

Abstract:
For wheelchair users who desire to participate in recreational activities, such as hiking and camping, an additional wheelchair specialized for outdoor recreational use is necessary. A secondary wheelchair is often expensive and difficult to transport. Thus, the need arose to design a wheelchair for both every day and recreational use. Design requirements were outlined by the Assistive Technology Laboratory (ATL) and Center for Persons with Disabilities (CPD) for a lightweight transformable wheelchair. The scope of the design is for users who are 12 to 30 years of age, a maximum weight of 250 lb., having reasonable upper body and head control, with the use of both hands.
